Given recent changes in the travel industry as well as WVU's experience in using MyTravel enabled by the AMEX Booking tool, the WVU Procurement Contracting and Payment Services (PCPS) team shares updates and exemptions:
American Airlines Flights:
In spring 2023, American Airlines changed the way it offers its best prices, resulting in most of its best deals being listed exclusively on the American Airlines website and app. University travelers booking American Airlines flights are now permitted to book directly through American Airlines without requesting an exemption. The most common flights from Pittsburgh where American Airlines will most likely be the best flight option would be Charlotte, Dallas, Las Vegas, Miami, New York, Orlando, Philadelphia and Phoenix.
Travelers are still required to use MyTravel to book flights on all other airlines unless granted an exception under Section XIV of the University’s Travel Manual. Travelers are encouraged to book flights with United Airlines or Southwest, when possible, to receive our negotiated discounts. Recent price comparisons show the United flights offered through MyTravel were on average 18% cheaper than the prices offered on United’s website, and Southwest’s flights were on average 4% cheaper through MyTravel than Southwest’s website.
Student Travel:
Due to limitations of access within MyTravel, students traveling for University business are exempt from using MyTravel. Students may book travel outside of MyTravel without requesting an exception. This includes student employees. The faculty/staff leading student travel events are also exempt from using MyTravel for the purpose of these events. Remember to register all international travel with Global Affairs.
